[PART 2] FAQ- A guide to Essential Oils

by Queenie Lee | 2 Aug 2021

There are numerous articles claiming the advantages of taking essential oil internally. Have you ever thought to do so? Is 100% pure and natural essential oil safe to consume? Let’s jump right into the topic now.

Are essential oils safe to be used internally?
General internal consumption of essential oils are not recommended. Essential oils are not safe to consume and can cause significant poisoning even if small amounts are ingested.

According to Amy Galpe, aromatherapist and co-founder of the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies, “The molecules and chemical constituents that make up essential oils are irritating to mucous membrane tissue,”. “Nausea, stomach pain and neurological discomfort like nerve pain and numbness can occur if you do so”, says Dr Yufang Lin, an integrative medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic.

You may be curious, carrier oil is used to dilute essential oil for your skin. Can you “dilute” essential oil in water to be used internally? The answer is no. Diluting essential oils in water doesn’t work either as it is not soluble in water. Do not think it’s fine to swallow just a few drops of essential oil.
Symptoms may develop as quickly as 30 minutes after ingestion and essential oils are potent and rapidly absorbed orally. Considering our digestive tract is much more sensitive than skin, do not ingest essential oil to avoid any irritation occurring.
