How Muslims Keep The Raya Spirit Alive!

by Stefanie | 10 May 2022

As we’re now in the endemic phase with lesser restrictions in place, it’s time to blast Sudirman’s Balik Kampung on your radio. With the nostalgic smell of lemang in the air and the stunning pelita lamps lining the streets, this year’s Raya celebrations are sure to hit a little closer (quite literally) to home for many of us. Despite all that, it’s important to always remember the lessons that this festive season teaches us – Gratitude & Forgiveness.

Here are some of our favourite and most meaningful customs that our Muslim brothers and sisters practice to keep the Raya spirit alive whether we are near or far from our loved ones.

Praying.
The Raya celebrations begin with an early morning prayer in the mosque, where Muslims pray for blessings, peace and harmony. Some families would also prefer to visit the graves of their loved ones who have passed away. It’s a rather solemn yet heartwarming time as it’s a constant reminder for us to stay grounded and in touch with our beliefs.

A Raya feast.
Food brings people together but oftentimes, it’s a home-cooked feast that makes everything just that little bit better. Besides being able to spend some quality time with your loved ones in the kitchen, you’ll also be helping carry the tradition down to future generations by learning how to cook traditional dishes that warms the heart.

Give and receive duit Raya.
Beautiful money packets that’re stuffed with crisp banknotes are a common sight during the Raya festivities. Giving out duit Raya is seen as an act of love and generosity extended to the elders who've raised us, kids and also the less fortunate as this is very much keeping with the Islamic practice of charity and giving back.

Coordinating outfits.
As loved ones near and far come together for a beautiful reunion, it also calls for a fun opportunity for every member of the clan to come clad in baju raya of a similar hue or design. It’s truly a heartwarming sight to see everyone dressed and coordinated for the occasion.
