To-do List Amidst This Festive February

by Dhanya Parameswaran | 8 Feb 2022

With February being a truncated month and 2022 being a non-leap year, we have exactly 28 days this year to go about our festive activities which consists of the Lunar New Year and Valentine’s day!

In case you were wondering how to utilize your February wisely this time, we have got a list of activities ready for you to consider doing this year:

Yee Sang

The yee sang (also yu sheng/lou sang) is a traditional dish that is known as the "prosperity salad" because it is thought to bring good fortune, money and abundance to people who throw it up. Gong hei fat choy (gong-shee fah-tsai) and gong xi fa cai (gong-shee fah-tsai) are two Cantonese and Mandarin New Year greetings that loosely translate to "May you grow rich!" As a result, it is only natural that eating customs evoke prosperity wishes.

Virtual Gathering and open houses

Due to the ongoing Standard Operational Procedure (S.O.P) it is wise to have an open house gathering with your close and direct relatives to minimize contact. Additionally, it is the perfect opportunity to show off your cooking talent through serving a wide array of your tastiest food, drinks and door gifts of mandarin oranges to those present. It also doubles as a reunion between family members as people come together to reminisce about their glory days and share plans for the future. Finally, you can also celebrate this Chinese New Year with your distant relatives through a virtual gathering over zoom meeting or FaceTime to remind them of your well-being whilst keeping everyone safe this festive season.

Watch A Dragon and lion Dance

Some may consider this an event for the holiday season itself, visiting malls to see their stunning decorations has become a mandatory subject in your to do list this year if it has not already. Local mega malls are best known for their extravagant over-the-top holiday displays all year, but especially during Chinese New Year! Head over to Pavilion, Suria KLCC, Mid Valley Megamall, 1 Utama, or Sunway Putra Mall to check out some of the most brilliant decorations this Chinese New Year.

Chap Goh Mei

According to the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days with the main focus revolving around the first 3 days. Chap Goh Mei marks the 15th day of this festive celebration and it is celebrated with ample enthusiasm as folklore says this is when unwedded women toss mandarin oranges into the ocean, river, or lake in hopes to get a good husband. Today, this tradition has inherited a modern touch with women writing their mobile numbers on them. Whereas bachelors in boats will row to these oranges and fish them out, a truly lighthearted activity to conclude the Lunar New Year. On an additional note, you should ensure that the vicinity you plan to visit allows for such activities to be conducted and to avoid being fined for littering.

Flaunt your love!

The time has come for you to express your love and admiration to your lover, friends, and family, but most importantly, towards yourself. Treat yourself as you would treat your loved ones, indulge in a luxurious spa session, cook yourself a healthy meal, or even take yourself on a date to truly experience the beauty of the most powerful entity on earth today!
