Things to Consider before Voting on MAY 9TH!

by Kar Yan | 10 Apr 2018

The dates of the 14th General Election has already been announced by Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah during a packed media briefing, which was also broadcast live. This was after chairing a special EC meeting for about two hours. As the election draws closer and closer, here are some things to do before you vote:

1. Make a list of issues that are important to you.
This is to guide you in choosing a candidate who cares about the same things as you do. It's best to divide them into two separate categories for the social and the economic issues. As you research, write down how each candidate plans to address these issues.

2. Use a variety of news sources when researching, regardless of your political affiliation.
Don't just watch one news channel to get your information, and try reading different newspapers. A good way to get all sides of a story is to look at the sources most bias towards each party, and then look at neutral sources. Keep in mind that most media outlets will be bias towards one party.

3. Watch the debates.
Regardless of any party you support, you should watch debates (whenever, there is one in Malaysia). This also helps you in making decisions. While you're watching the debates, snack up your cravings with Signature Snack! Cheeky eh?

4. Don’t be a jerk.
OK, this is an understatement which really has to do with what happens after you vote. No matter what goes down on the polling day, we are all in the same difficult, complex predicament — and none of the politicians are going to solve that. We as citizens need to start figuring out how to work together, or this thing isn’t going to work. A lot of this whole conundrum feels out of our control, but each of us can control how we treat others. So, don’t set social media ablaze if things don’t work out, and instead let’s get to work on building a better world. In short, remember to respect each others' views and decisions.

5. Keep an open mind.
Go into your research trying to see where each candidate is coming from. Don't discard someone simply because your best friend says their ridiculous, and don't root for someone just because your father claims they're a genius. THIS IS YOUR DECISION. YOUR VOTE. CHOOSE WISELY.

Don’t forget to share this with your loved one on your social media. Have a good day!
