Valentine's Day Heart Emoji Guide

by Stefanie | 27 Jan 2020

You probably would have noticed the numerous heart emojis laying in your keyboard but have you actually thought about why there even are so many to begin with? Well, according to Cosmopolitan, there are actually distinctive meanings for each of the hearts! So, we’re here to break down the top 9 most commonly used heart emojis to step up your emoji game this Valentine’s Day!

Disclaimer: There is no universal translation for each emoji so these are just some general guidelines you could use when sending a heart to your significant other... or anyone for that matter!

1. Red heart ❤️
Red is such a classic colour for love so likewise, it is a classic emoji as well. Known to be the most romantic heart, it is great for lovebirds in the early stages of their relationship! However, for those who are further into their relationship, avoid using this all the time and step up your emoji game. The red heart is also a timeless and relatively neutral emoji so it is acceptable to send and receive from just about anyone and for any occasion!

2. Orange heart 🧡
Also known as the coward’s heart, the orange heart is for those who are in non-committal relationships. Either that, or their fingers just barely missed the red heart located right above it. Orange is also too random of a colour so this orange heart does not have any significant meaning to it other than for commitment issues or mistakes.

3. Yellow heart 💛
Yellow colour is most associated with happiness and exerts friendly energy so you are most likely to see this yellow heart being used in family group chats and among your friend groups! It is a relatively safe emoji to be used on everyone, other than if you are trying to take your relationship to the next level.

4. Green heart 💚
Everyone and their mother know what a green heart means so on that note, it may also be referred to as the braggart's heart. Despite the green bringing out environmental context, it also implies doing good and volunteering. Therefore, this green heart emoji has more meaning and speaks more for the sender rather than on the relationship the sender has with their receiver.

5. Blue heart 💙
This blue heart symbolizes an unspoken bond between the male species, or “bros” as they are more commonly known as. While some may assume that this is because of gender stereotypes, blue generally implies a friendship that isn’t as deep as you want it to be. In this case, a blue heart is sufficient to show that you care about them, and that’s about it.

6. Purple heart 💜
Purple colour is commonly known as a powerful colour. Likewise, the purple heart symbolizes a loyal, understanding and compassionate relationship. If you receive a purple heart in your texts, chances are nothing can in between the both of you! This purple heart is also commonly used in a “respect your elders” sort of concept so you would often see this emoji being used in good morning wishes to your grandparents.

7. Black heart 🖤
Black is such a mature colour that it is no surprise how this black heart also symbolizes a love as deep as the ocean. It is perfect to be used when expressing your feelings to your soulmate. However, black can also mean a rebellious love. Young, puppy love would probably be using this quite a lot.

8. Broken heart 💔
No explanation needed for this one. Many would probably not want to be receiving this emoji during Valentine’s Day since it obviously means heartbreak. However, it can also simply mean one is trying to mess around. Those who are not great with admitting they are wrong and apologizing (which you actually should be) would probably love using this emoji to guilt their partner into apologizing instead.

9. Sparkling heart 💖
As adorable as it looks, this sparkling heart also has an adorable meaning, and it is simply to show your appreciation and gratitude to just about anyone! Your significant other, your best friend or even your cat, this is a perfect emoji to do just that without any sort of innuendo being implied.
