Breaking The Taboo Surrounding Breast Cancer: How You Can Help

by Stefanie | 23 Oct 2020

Breast cancer is fast becoming a public health crisis in Malaysia. According to the Malaysian Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting Malaysian women, with about 1 in 19 women in this country being at risk. With society creating a taboo over this topic, the situation could worsen. Going pink during the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October annually is what we can do as a community to come together and break the silence. We need to speak up and create awareness in order to build a more informed nation.

Now, moving on to ways you can help in raising awareness towards this meaningful cause.

1. Support

With quite a prevalent stigma still present among our community, many patients are often left to fight this disease alone. It can be extremely demotivating to go through such a scary time with no support by your side. Hence, extending emotional support to breast cancer patients throughout their fight truly goes a long way. Be there for them, listen to them with your heart rather than your ears and just normalize everything.

2. Help

Undergoing breast cancer treatments can be very time-consuming. More so, if you have other responsibilities to attend to such as family, kids and work. Lend a helping hand to breast cancer patients by offering to do their chores, getting groceries, babysitting and the list goes on. Sometimes, offering help can be hard but it’s the simple acts that truly make a big difference in someone’s life.

3. Educate

Prevention is always better than cure and the best form of prevention is through education and raising awareness. It involves using your voice for a cause. Break the stigma towards breast cancer by educating yourself on self-examining your breasts, being aware towards what’s normal for your own body and learning to avoid risk factors that contribute to breast cancer. If you’re already well aware of everything, break the silence by educating your family, friends and community as well. Remember that nobody fights alone.
