A Glance at Leoz Lam: His Journey into the World of Comics

Leoz Lam, a Taiping native comic artist who goes by the pseudonym of “Leoz” has made waves in Malaysia’s comic scene. The local comic artist won a bronze award at the 13th International Manga Award last year for his horror themed comic “Detektif Hantu”, and only a handful of 15 out of 345 participants were selected to win the prestigious award.

Leoz’s love for comics was rooted from his primary schooling days. Similar to many childhoods, the first manga he read was the popular series Dragon ball which was a common gatekeeper that influenced many of us to venture into the realm of anime, comics and games. The Dragon ball series sparked his love for comics and prompted him to start drawing comics in hopes to express his stories in his own comics one day.

Prior to becoming famous in the local comic scene, Leoz was a comic tutor in his hometown and was involved with the “Warm Hearts” comic series. He began his journey as a small town boy with big aspirations. Upon reading various art books, newspaper comic columns, watching several video sources about art drawing techniques, as well as the support and feedback from his family and friends, he gained inspiration to kick start his career in the comic scene.

He looks up to Japanese manga artist “Masashi Kishimoto” who created the popular manga series Naruto as the series played a huge role in Leoz’s journey towards becoming a manga artist himself.

In the past, Leoz created comics for the purpose of childrens’ education. However, his award-winning horror-themed comic was always something that he wanted to pursue instead. Coincidentally, the publishing house he works with saw the potential in the market for horror-themed comics and gave him the opportunity to create this masterpiece.
