Yay Or Nay: Breakfast Before Yoga

by Stefanie | 6 Jul 2021

Yoga is all about getting our mind and body in balance. It helps us to connect to our bodies and brings us along a rewarding journey to finding inner peace and stability. With that in mind, eating mindfully is a major component of a yogic lifestyle, yet it often seems neglected.

Let’s first establish that yoga can be done at any time of the day. There isn’t a particular timeframe or schedule that has been linked to a more effective and efficient yoga session. Though with the current situation that we’re in, the majority of us will be spending more time indoors. This makes morning yoga an amazing addition to our daily routine to get us up and moving for the rest of the day.

Moving on to our eating habits, it’s important to keep in mind that everybody’s bodies are different. Some have a quick and easy digestive system while others may digest foods a little slower − and that’s totally normal. This also means that some of you may be going into your yoga session with a heavy stomach, making it a rather uncomfortable and even nauseating time. On the other hand, going in on an empty stomach also means a lack of energy so you may feel lightheaded and distracted. Having that said, we’d highly recommend you to have a small breakfast before you start your morning yoga.

So what should I eat?

Look for quick and easy bites that are easy to digest and aren’t too heavy on your stomach. Remember that you know your body better than anyone else so feel free to eat whatever you enjoy while making good choices for your body and mind. Here are some recommendations.

1. Fruits
2. Nuts
3. Simple carbohydrates (such as avocado toast and veggies dipped in hummus)
4. Smoothies
5. Grains (such as oatmeal and muesli)
