Your Modern-Day Guide to Gifting

by Stefanie | 14 Jun 2021

Gifting can get pretty daunting. Though it’s super helpful to always bring things back to the basic sentiment of the gifting season – Celebrating your loved ones. It’s important to understand that you absolutely don’t need an elaborate form of gifting. You don’t need to go all out and buy something huge for them nor do you need to crack your heads in DIY-ing something from scratch. We usually end up getting stuck on what we assume the recipient would want rather than considering what actually means most to that person. So, we’re here to help you gift more thoughtfully!

1. You don’t always need a gift.
Majority of the time, we feel pressured into getting everyone (and we mean everyone) gifts. From every colleague in your office to friends and family you aren’t necessarily close to, this just leads to ungenuine gifts and not-to-mention, extra spending. In these cases, a simple heartfelt card serves just the same purpose!

2. You should not feel obligated to gift.
This is exceptionally important. Personally, I’m a huge believer in gifting sincerely. I don’t send gifts, expecting something in return. That just defeats the whole purpose of the gifting season. A general rule of thumb to keep in mind is gifts should never have to be matched in quantity or cost-point. They should only be matched with a genuine celebration of the recipient. That being said, if you’re greeted with a surprise gift, offer the sender a warm thank you instead of highlighting that you didn’t get them one.

Always focus on the intention and appreciation!

3. Belated gifts are perfectly fine.
You shouldn’t take belated gifting personally. Instead, understand that it’s always the thought that counts. Some people may just be bad at remembering dates and that’s perfectly fine. At the end of the day, it’s always better late than never. If you’re reading this now and only just remembered that you missed out on a loved one’s gift, don’t worry. Just send a simple apology along with your gift or card!
