3 Conversation Starters to Strengthen Your Mother-Daughter Relationship
We all have completely different mother-daughter relationships. Some may have a really close-knit one where you do almost everything together. Others may just not be as close though they do have a friendly relationship together. And for many others who are unfortunately dealing with a strained relationship for one reason or another. No matter what, we can’t help but feel a change in dynamics especially as we get older. Having conversations is a great way to forge a stronger relationship with our mom.
We’ve listed down 3 conversation starters to help you develop a happier and healthier relationship with your mom!
1. Ask about her childhood.
One way to get started is to get to know your mom on a more intimate level. By asking about her childhood, you’ll have a better understanding and sense of her as a person. You’ll learn more about her likes and dislikes, motivations and even the way she responds to conflict. The older generations, especially those from Asian communities may be reluctant to talk about their pasts so in such cases, don’t try to push them. Let your mom know that you simply want to understand and get to know her better.
2. Ask about the differences in stages of her life.
Generation gaps don’t have to be dividing. This is a great way to get your mom thinking back on her life experiences and moments as well. You could begin by asking her about what she misses most about her childhood and slowly build it up to adulthood. As for your role, be an active listener. Active listening doesn’t only mean to direct your focus entirely to the conversation, but also to try and understand her side of the story, even if you don’t necessarily agree with it. This gives you the opportunity to learn more about your mom in a discreet manner rather than actually asking her to express herself.
3. Ask about life advice.
One of the best ways to build a bond with your mom is to ask for their advice. You know what they say – moms always give the best advice. So go to them when you need help, clarity or anything really. Be sure you’re open to understanding your mom’s perspective as well though. At times, our ego can get the best of us and we may feel defensive if something doesn’t align with our way of thinking. Know that having an open mind is the first step to moving forward in anything you do.
