A Little Different, Yet The Bond Remains
We are only 3 days away from the end of the holy month of Ramadan. This year especially, things have been physically and mentally draining for us all. Yet, we feel that that’s exactly what brought us together as a nation. With most of us having had an entire month of fasting and rigorous self-control all by ourselves, it showed us the true meaning of Ramadan too, emphasizing on the spirit of forgiveness and gratitude.
As Muslims all around the world get ready to celebrate Eid Mubarak or Hari Raya, as it’s more commonly known here, we can’t help but reflect on this blissful occasion. Despite things being a tad different than they were in the previous years, the significance of Eid remains the same – Reunion, Forgiveness and Feasting!
Reunion
Similar to our fellow Malaysian brothers and sisters, reunion or balik kampung is always a joyous time. Everyone returns to their hometowns to celebrate with loved ones. Families are always dressed to the nines in their finest baju Melayu and baju kurung, typically clad in a similar colour palette or pattern. Though many of us still may not be able to return home this year, that should not stop us from celebrating. Schedule video calls with your loved ones on the morning of Raya, pray together and just do what you’d normally do on this occasion – only this time, it’s through a screen!
Forgiveness
Raya is also a time of fellowship, forgiveness and reconciliation between family and friends. It’s always a sentimental morning as family members ask for forgiveness from one another. Another practice during this time is also to gather around the gravesites of their departed relatives and friends to pray and clean the final resting places of their loved ones. Often a sombre and reflective moment for some, we believe this leads to reconciliation between families and friends. Take the time to call your loved ones and have a chat to reminisce on the good times this year. Let’s not dull this bright and beautiful celebration but rather find creative ways to keep the Raya spirit going!
Feasting
Like other festive celebrations, Raya is the best time to indulge in delightful traditional delicacies. Relish in your favourite kuih-muih, rendang, ketupat, dodol and oh-so-many other mouth-watering dishes, some of which you can only get during this festive season. If you’re celebrating with loved ones, opt to use a designated label for each dish so you can eat to your heart’s (and tummy’s) content the social distance-friendly way!
