5 Chinese New Year Taboos You Should Know

by Stefanie | 23 Jan 2021

We’ve come a long way learning about the dos and don’ts about Chinese New Year. Personally, I’ve even got myself entangled in some awkward and what I assumed to be, unnecessary nagging for breaking some of these taboos!

Here are the top 5 taboos to avoid during CNY for a (hopefully) more prosperous year ahead!

1. No washing or cutting your hair.
In Mandarin, hair (fa: 发) sounds like wealth (fa cai: 发财) thus it is believed that if you wash your hair on the 1st day of CNY, you’d also be washing away your wealth that this celebration brings. Similarly, this also stands for not cutting your hair.

2. No porridge for breakfast.
Porridge is treated as more to a comfort food in the modern times though it was the complete opposite in the olden days. It was once seen as a sustenance for poor families so to eat a bowl of porridge during CNY would mean staying poor for the rest of the year.

3. No wearing of black or white clothes.
Traditionally, red is always known to be a colour of prosperity and joy for CNY. This was because any dark colours, particularly black and white have been associated with death or mourning hence are considered unlucky colours.

4. No breaking of anything ceramic or glass.
Though this one shouldn’t just be applied during CNY, there’s actually a deeper meaning to it. Try to be more careful around fragile items, especially during CNY as it’s believed that anything that breaks means that unfortunately incidents may occur to a loved one.

5. No sweeping or taking out trash.
You’d probably think you’re doing a huge favour to your parents but you may want to skip this one out. It’s believed that if you sweep or take out the trash, you’re also removing all the fortune for the entire year.
