Natural DIY Organic Natural Cleaning Products to try yourself!
Since we have so many options when it comes to commercial cleaning products in Malaysia it might not have occurred to you to start making your own cleaning products? Malaysia has many options when it comes to consumer goods also in area of cleaning products we have our very own country brands dominating the market. However, not all are safe to be used and natural cleaning products I have to admit cost a bomb!. Since making it yourself is so much cheaper and most of the ingredients are also available in most of our kitchens why not give it a try? I will be sharing some natural DIY Organic Natural Cleaning Products that you can try to make it yourself!
1. DIY ALL PURPOSE CLEANER NO VINEGAR
Ingredients
• 2 tsp of baking soda
• 1 tsp liquid castile soap
• about 1 1/2 cups water
• spray bottle
Directions
• Measure baking soda into a clean spray bottle. Add about 1 cup of water and replace the lid. Shake it vigorously until the baking soda dissolves, less than a minute.
• Then add castile soap, replace lid and gently swish in circles to combine. Do NOT shake vigorously, or your soap might make a bunch of bubbles (which isn’t the end of the world, but the solution won’t mix until they pop). The mixture will be a little bit cloudy at this point. Now If there’s room in your bottle, you can add the remaining 1/2 cup water, otherwise you’re done!
• For your information the cleaner might separate over time, so if it does, just swish gently in circles to re-mix. Then spray directly on the surface to be cleaned (after you’ve tested in an inconspicuous spot, just to be safe) and wipe clean.
2. Homemade liquid hand soap
Ingredients:
• Two 5 oz. bars of pure castile soap
• 1 gallon of filtered or distilled water
• Essential Oils or Vanilla Extract (optional)
(FYI: When using pure castile soap there’s no need for the glycerin that so many other recipes call for as castile soap has natural glycerin in it.)
Directions:
• First of all grate your little soap bars until you have a nice giant pile of shredded soap.
• Then heat up your water in a very large pot.
• Stir in the soap. Continue stirring until all the little flakes are dissolved. It’s depending on the size of the grater, this can take a few minutes or go pretty quickly.
• Remove mixture off heat and let it sit for 12 – 24 hours. This mixture will thicken during this time. (Stir occasionally throughout the day, but don’t stress about it.)
• Now stir in your essential oils or vanilla extract, if using. You should start small and put in enough until you get the right amount of “fragrance” for you.
• Pour mixture into containers. This will make quite a bit.
• You can now enjoy your toxic-free, frugal, and easy homemade liquid hand soap.
3. Homemade Disinfectant Wipes
Things you need:
• 1 cup water
• ¼ cup with vinegar
• 8 drops tea tree oil
• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
• 8 drops lemon essential oil
Method
• Empty “wipe” container (baby wipe, for example)
• 15 to 20 squares of cloth (old t-shirts work well, as do old dish towels or similar material)
• You must fold and place the cloth squares into the empty wipe container and set aside.
• Then combine in a mixing bowl the water, vinegar, and 3 essential oils, stirring until well mixed.
• Last step is to pour this mixture over the cloth in the container where they will soak in and be ready for you to pull out and use!
4. Homemade Liquid Dish Soap
Things you need:
• ½ cup warm distilled water
• 2 tsp kosher salt
• ½ cup white vinegar
• ½ cup Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds
• 1 tsp lemon juice
• Lemon essential oil (optional)
Method
• First step is to combine distilled water with salt, stirring until the salt is dissolved.
• Using a separate bowl, combine the vinegar, Sal Suds, and lemon juice. Stir this mixture into the salt water mixture, and stir until thickened.
• You may wish to add 10 – 15 drops of lemon essential oil both for scent and for disinfectant properties.
• Lastly, pour the mixture into a recycled dish soap container for storage.
5. Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
Things you need:
• 1 cup salt
• 2 cups baking soda
• 2 cups Borax
• get 1 cup of Lemi-Shine (non-toxic & can be found in the detergent aisle)
Method
• Mix all ingredients together. Transfer to an air-tight storage container. It will be able to last a long time: each load uses only 2 tablespoons of detergent! (it is recommend keeping white vinegar in the rinse agent compartment, too.)
6. Homemade Oven Cleaner
Things you need:
• ½ cup baking soda
• 2 – 3 Tbsp water (or more/less)
• White vinegar (1/2 cup or so)
Method
• Using a small bowl, mix ½ cup of baking soda and stir in 2 – 3 tablespoons of water, adjusting as needed to get a spreadable paste.
• Then spread this all over the walls of your ovens, rubbing it in for a scrubbing effect.
• Let that mixture rest overnight.
• In the morning you can put some vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz everywhere you see baking soda, which will create a foaming action. You should wipe clean with a damp cloth, rinsing until clean.
7. Homemade Drain Cleaner
Things you need:
• ¼ – ½ cup baking soda
• ¼ cup white vinegar
Method
• Firstly, sprinkle baking soda down the clogged or smelly drain, and follow that with the vinegar. Let the bubbling mixture sit for an hour or so and then pour boiling hot water down the drain to rinse.
• Depending on how smelly or clogged the drain is, you may need to repeat the process again. Once you start doing it regularly, you’ll find that one time usually takes care of it!
8. Homemade Air Freshener
Things you need:
• 12 to 15 drops of pure essential oils such as grapefruit, lemon, orange, lavender are favorites
• ½ cup white vinegar
• 1/12 cups water
Method
• Firstly, combine in a spray bottle, shake, and spray to freshen the room! (Remember to shake before each use).
• You may experiment with higher ratios of vinegar to water and upping the essential oil if this is not strong enough for your preference.
9. Homemade Non-Toxic Liquid Laundry Detergent
Things you need:
• ½ cup Borax
• ½ cup washing soda (i.e. Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda Laundry Booster)
• get ½ cup of Dawn dish soap
• 4 cups hot water
• Clean, empty gallon plastic jug (i.e. recycled juice/milk jug)
Method:
• You now must combine the first three ingredients in the container (you may need a funnel to get it in there) and then pour in the water to dissolve the ingredients. Also fill the container to the top with cold water. Shake before each use. For an estimated standard-sized load of laundry, ¼ cup should work. It is recommended to use a little more for a more heavily-soiled load.
10. Homemade Stain Remover
There are a few ways that you can tackle stains in the laundry room. First of all let me just say that a 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution is a super stain remover! There is also the mixture of washing soda and white vinegar. You can simply sprinkle the washing soda onto the stain, spray with white vinegar that has been diluted in a 1:1 ratio with water. Then scrub the paste into the stain and let it stand for about 20 minutes. Launder as normal. If it is a really tough stain, like grass stains, the magic of Dawn dish soap comes in handy. This one calls for a bit of a recipe:
Things you need:
• 2/3 cup Dawn dish detergent
• 2/3 cup ammonia
• 6 Tbsp baking soda
• 2 cups warm water
Method
• You must mix together all ingredients, and then pour into a spray bottle. Then spray onto the stain, let it rest a bit, then launder as normal. Due to the ammonia, you should NOT want this in chlorine bleach!
